Making Threads in Solid Works

Solid Works is a computer based solid modeling software. It has several types of modeling works. So article is about creating a threaded cut. It may use to create threads in nail, bottle, shaft and so on. Most of the beginners are struggling in the thread cuts. There are ways to create cut but here is a method.

Suppose, you are going to make a thread to long nail portion given below.

  •        Take bottom plane/part of the nail for the sketch. Then click Sketch
  •     Click the circle and simply you can turn that circle to usable circle by Convert Entities on    Sketch tab or Draw another circle on the sketch as same as the solid(Reason for giving  Convert Entities is to convert the current dimension to another)

  •      Then Exit from the Sketch
  •      Go to Features tab and then go to Curves. On That Click Helix and Spiral.

  •             There will be pop-up window on your left hand side. In that different parameters can be             given according to your needs. Following diagram shows that parameters needed for this            nails.

  •           Give the Starting angle to 0 degrees to get a simple profile for the thread cut.
  •           Then Sketch the plane where the spiral profile starts for the cut as follows

  •        Now Exit from the Sketch. Give Swept cut on the Features tab.
  •      Select the Cut sketch and profile path in the pop-up window on left hand side as shown below

  •                 Now you have a simple thread cut for a nail.

This method is suitable for Solid Works 2014 version and following versions. Only interface differed to previous versions. Check it with the guides
